Selecting Network Configuration

Learn about the network configurations available for your server.

When ordering a root server or VPS from generation 12 onwards, you can now choose how to connect your server to the network:

1. IPv4 and IPv6 Connectivity

With this configuration, you will receive a static IPv4 address and a /64 IPv6 subnet. If you do not make a selection when placing your order, this setting will be used automatically.

This option offers maximum compatibility and corresponds to the previous conditions. After ordering, you can purchase additional IPv4 addresses, IPv6 subnets, and cloud VLANs for an extra charge. For more information, see: Adding IP Addresses

2. IPv6 Connectivity

With this configuration, you will receive a /64 IPv6 subnet. A public IPv4 address is not included.

This option is suitable for modern applications, internal services, and test environments that are already fully IPv6-capable. It is also suitable for servers that will only be accessible via private networks, VPNs, or load balancers. Please note that your server will not be accessible via an IPv4 connection.

After ordering, you can add additional /64 IPv6 subnets for an extra charge. It is not possible to assign an IPv4 address at a later date. For more information, see: Adding IP Addresses

3. Cloud vLAN only

With this configuration, your server can only be accessed via the assigned Cloud vLAN. No public IPv4 or IPv6 address is provided.

This option is suitable for operating the server entirely via private networks and VPNs, without a public network connection (e.g., for internal services, cluster nodes, database servers, or isolated system components). It provides a clearly defined and controllable network environment, offering maximum isolation and security.

With this configuration, you must add the Cloud vLAN separately. Available packages can be found at: Extensions for KVM Servers

"Cloud vLAN Free 100 Mbit/s" is a free version. Be sure to configure the Cloud vLAN at the same location as your server.

Please note that with this configuration, you cannot add additional IP addresses later. Your server will not be accessible externally.

Which Option Should I Choose if I Am Unsure?

If you are unsure which configuration is best for your project, we recommend the default setting IPv4 + IPv6 Connectivity (IPv4 address and /64 IPv6 subnet). This option offers the highest compatibility and is suitable for almost all applications.
