1. What Is a Domain?

An internet domain is the name under which a website can be accessed on the internet. Every website or internet service has a unique number, known as an IP address. However, as it is difficult to remember and distinguish between long numbers, domain names were introduced. These are freely selectable words that are separated from the top-level domain by a dot. The word or domain in conjunction with the top-level domain can only be registered once worldwide to ensure unique assignment to a unique IP address.

When someone wants to visit a website, they enter the domain name in their browser. The browser then automatically searches for the corresponding IP address and displays the content of the website. Domains are also used to create individual and distinctive email addresses. An email address typically consists of a username followed by an @ symbol and the domain extension.

Both netcup web hosting and our servers can be easily accessed via domains. In addition, domains purchased from netcup are flexible and can also be used with other providers without any problems.
